2020 Season Preview

Head Coach: Scott Pressman (13th Season / Record: 286-144)

2019 Overall Record:  25-5  /  Shore Conference:  10-2  /  A-North:  5-2
#7 ShoreConferenceWrestling.com Top 11
Sectionals: CJG5 Finalists
3rd Place A-North
2nd Place District 20
10th Place Shore Conference Tournament

Down Low (106-132):  A solid group, consisting of a pair of returning starters, a couple of senior transfers, and some promising freshmen looking to make an impact. The returning starters are Calvin Burke and Chris Balzano, both juniors. Balzano is coming off a 22 victory season, while Burke placed 3rd in D20. There will be a lot of newcomers expected to see time in the lineup here, as well. Among them are the Schifters, Justin and Jason, who come over from Freehold Twp. Both placed 2nd in the respective weights in D21 a year ago, and help make this a strong group for the Braves. Several incoming freshmen will be looking to make an impact also. Among them are Anthony Vitola, Advait Sepur, Vincent DePierro, Mike Quagliano, and Nick Heckel. The potential is here for this to be a very strong group.

In The Middle (138-160): The Braves took their biggest hit to graduation in the middleweights. Senior Hunter Konstantoulas will look to be the anchor of this group that will be breaking in some new starters. Konstantoulas is coming off a 30 win 2019 in which he won a District Title and advanced to Atlantic City after placing 4th in the Region. James Grande, a junior, got a ton of experience last year and will be looking to have a breakout 2020.

Up Top (170-Hwt): More experienced talent lies in the upperweights for the Braves, too, with their five returners having combined for 138 victories last season. Senior Matt Benedetti, who has 103 career wins, finished 6th in the State last year and gives the Braves a big time hammer in the uppers. He enters the year needing 21 victories to break the program record. Also advancing to AC last year was junior Gavin Claro who won 34 matches and took 4th at Regions. Dylan Waller is another big gun back for the Braves. The senior won 30 bouts last year and finished 3rd in the Districts. Adding to the wealth of talent returning up top for Manalapan are senior heavyweight, Matt Kovacs, a 20-bout winner, and junior George Zavalnik, who won 13 matches in 2019. If this group stays healthy, it has the potential to be one of the best upperweight groups in the Shore.

The Braves have a ton of talented experience returning throughout the lineup giving them tremendous balance. If the newcomer in the middle and down low make an impact, this will be a lineup without any weakness. The upperweight crew particularly is going to cause a lot of problems for teams, as they can come at you with a solid wrestler at every one of those weights. The key dates on the regular season schedule look to be on January 4th in an A-North quad at Long Branch, and then on January 29th when they host Howell. Even with some significant losses to graduation, there is more than enough talent here to threaten the program record of 27 dual wins in a season, and finish above their final ranking of #7 in the Shore last season.
